Wesley Thompson
General Information
A native son of the Shoals, Thompson and his family moved to Fort Sill, Oklahoma when he was eight years old upon his mother’s enlistment in the Army. But his path has always led him home to the Shoals—first for college at the University of North Alabama and then again when he answered the call to pastor Bethel Colbert Missionary Baptist Church.
Thompson currently works as a chaplain for Amedisys Hospice and resides in Muscle Shoals with his wife and three sons. His wife is also a graduate of the University of North Alabama and a local small business owner.
One of Thompson’s reasons for being drawn back to the Shoals was his desire to take what he gained in education and life experiences and use them to be a leader for the shoals, making a positive impact in his community.
Having served as a pastor for five years and a hospice chaplain for three years, Thompson walked alongside people in not only their best moments but also their worst, allowing him to witness many angles of human experiences as well as Alabama’s healthcare system. Knowing that many of these experiences are a direct cause of legislation in this state, his perspective and empathy allow him to be a strong voice and advocate for those he serves.
As a substitute teacher across the Shoals and as a father, he has a keen understanding of the importance of investing in the lives of our children and in the lives of the hard-working teachers dedicated to educating our children. In reference to his sons and their education, Thompson states, “I care about their future and the future of every young person in our community and state. Education must always be a top priority in Montgomery. Our children’s futures depend on it.”
Thompson has been a committed leader in the Shoals for years, serving as the 3rd Vice-President and Religious Affairs Chair for the Tri-County Branch NAACP, as well as a board member of Crossroad Community Outreach, Common Ground Shoals, and the Kaiden Project. As a proven leader in the community, he has worked tirelessly to highlight injustice and promote meaningful solutions for change. “I use my voice, my energy, and my influence to help those who feel ostracized, voiceless, and mistreated. Anytime a person or group is unfairly dismissed due to their difference, I believe our community has an obligation to help.”
Through his service as a pastor and through his community work, Thompson has shown deep love and commitment to our community. His personal experiences and proven leadership make him uniquely qualified to serve the great people of the Shoals in District 3 of Alabama’s House of Representatives, a responsibility he does not take lightly.
District 3 deserves a representative who will stand up for the Shoals and make sure our voice is heard in Montgomery. Wesley Thompson aims to be that voice.
