SB413 Alabama 2013 Session
Bill Summary
Under existing law, the members of the Board of Trustees for the Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University are appointed by the Governor pursuant to a process utilizing a nominating committee and the president of the university, who is appointed by the board, is responsible for appointing, removing, fixing the compensation of, and defining the duties of instructors; regulating, altering, and modifying the organization of the university, subject to review and concurrence of board; prescribing courses of instruction within academic programs approved by the board; and conferring academic degrees and honorary degrees upon recommendation of the faculty
This bill would substantially revise the composition of the nominating committee and the process for nominating, appointing, and confirming members of the board
This bill would also transfer those responsibilities of the president relating to instructors, the organization of the university, courses of instruction, and the conferring of academic and honorary degrees from the president to the board and would repeal a provision providing for removal of a trustee for a conflict of interest
To amend Sections 16-49-20 and 16-49-23, Code of Alabama 1975, relating to the Board of Trustees for Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University; to revise the composition of the nominating committee; and to revise the process for nominating, appointing, and confirming members of the board; to transfer certain responsibilities of the president of the university to the board; and to repeal Section 16-49-29, Code of Alabama 1975, relating to the removal of a trustee for a conflict of interest.
