Bill Summary
Under current law, justices and judges in Alabama are members of the Judicial Retirement Fund. Circuit clerks and district attorneys have separate supernumerary systems in lieu of retirement plans. This bill establishes the Elected Court Officials' Plan under the Judicial Retirement Fund, changes benefits for justices and judges first elected or appointed on or after November 4, 2014, and provides that district attorneys and circuit clerks participate in the plan upon passage of a constitutional amendment to allow such participation. Additionally, this bill allows for preretirement death benefits for such officials
To amend Section 36-27B-1, Code of Alabama 1975, relating to preretirement death benefits for elected court officials; to establish the Elected Court Officials' Plan for retirement for justices, judges, district attorneys and circuit clerks; and to provide guidelines for the Elected Court Officials' Plan.
