Alabama Senate Passes Abortion Ban Bill Without Rape or Incest Exceptions, Now Heads To Governor’s Desk
Alabama Senators voted today 25-6 to approve a bill that would be America’s toughest on abortion. The bill now heads to the Governor’s desk.
The bill, HB 314 sponsored by Terri Collins (R-Decatur), would allow abortions only in circumstances where the mother’s life is at risk and make abortion punishable by up to 99 years in prison for the person who performs the abortion.
Attempts by Democrats to add an exception for rape and incest was rejected on a 21-11 vote. All 21 votes were Republican. 7 Democrats and 4 Republicans voted for the amendment. The four Republicans that voted for the amendment were Del Marsh, Cam Ward, Andrew Jones, and Jim McClendon.
Tensions were high at points during the debate with Sen. Bobby Singleton (D- Greensboro) speaking to Alabama Republicans and Governor Kay Ivey, saying that “You just raped the state of Alabama. You just took every baby and every woman who has been raped and you raped them all over again.”
Senator Vivian Figures (D-Mobile) took to the stand to remind everyone that this will likely end with Alabama taxpayers paying the ACLU as they did in 2013.
A signature by Governor Ivey will likely begin a lengthy lawsuit that the ACLU has promised to bring.
