Lee County School Property Tax Renewal Passes
The Lee County special election to renew existing property taxes for schools has passed. The tax renewals help fund Lee County, Auburn and Opelika schools as well as the Lee County Youth Development Center. The taxes are expected to generate around $12 million per year.
There was opposition to the renewals, with those opposed urging voters to vote no to send a message to elected officials that taxes are high enough already. The opponents object to school resources being used to advocate for a political outcome and also object to spending tax dollars on a special election instead of having this on the November general election ballot.
